Position a ladder beneath the light bulb you need to replace. Let the light bulb cool for 20 to 30 minutes if it was still operational. Adjust an eyeball trim until the light bulb points straight down toward the floor before removing the bulb. Cut a 6- to 8-inch length of duct tape and stick both ends of the tape to the face of the bulb where the tape hangs from the bulb face in a U-shape. Grab the outside of the duct tape and squeeze the tape together to create a handle.
Remove the bulb and take it with you to a home improvement center to purchase a replacement. Having the old bulb with you when purchasing the replacement ensures you will purchase the correct bulb for your downlight.
Turn the light switch off to your wet location trim downlight. Position a stepladder beneath the light bulb you need to replace. Let the bulb behind the trim cool for 20 to 30 minutes if necessary.
Grab the outside edge of the wet location trim with your fingertips. Pull the trim away from the ceiling until the trim stops. Squeeze the two torsion springs together with your fingers to release the trim from the bracket inside the downlight housing. Grab the bulb with your hand and turn it counterclockwise to remove it from the downlight housing socket. Take the bulb with you when you visit a home improvement center to purchase the correct replacement.
Do not guess at your light bulb, especially when replacing a bulb in a wet location trim. The wrong bulb could cause the housing to overheat and cause the light bulb to cycle off and on behind the trim. Insert the replacement light bulb into the housing socket. Turn the bulb clockwise until it stops. Squeeze the two torsion springs on the wet location trim together with your fingers. Insert the springs back into the brackets inside the downlight housing.
Push the trim against the ceiling with your hand and turn on the light switch. Turn off the light switch to your low-voltage downlights. Position a ladder beneath the downlight you need to replace. Let the low-voltage bulb cool for 20 to 30 minutes if necessary. Grab the outside edge of the low-voltage trim with your fingertips.
Pull the trim from the ceiling until it stops. Squeeze the two torsion springs together with your fingers on each side of the low-voltage trim to release it and the bulb from bracket inside the downlight housing. Pull the low-voltage light bulb from the low-voltage socket. The low-voltage bulb connects to the socket with two pins. Slip the low-voltage light bulb from beneath the spring clip holding it in the trim. Take the low-voltage bulb with you to a home improvement store to purchase a replacement.
Make sure you purchase a bulb that is the exact wattage and size. Also, compare the pins on the back of your original bulb to the replacement bulb. Make sure the pins are exactly the same width apart. Check the wattage of the bulb to make sure it is 12 volts and not volts, as these bulbs are almost identical. Do not attempt to bend the pins on the replacement bulb to make it fit your socket.
Insert the replacement bulb beneath the spring clamp to hold it in the trim. Line up the bulb pins with the two holes on the socket. Push the socket on the bulb. Squeeze the two torsion springs on the trim together with your fingers. Insert the springs into the brackets inside the downlight housing. Push the low-voltage trim against the ceiling with your hand and turn on the light switch.
